Mobile Logger for Science and Environmental Studies
This is an innovative, low-cost and pedagogy-embedded Mobile Logger specifically designed and developed for STEM Education, Science Education and Environmental Studies in primary and secondary schools as well as for teacher's education in universities in accordance with the following guiding principles:
1. Enable students’ creative design and conduction of scientific experiments and field trip activities with collection of authentic data by the students themselves.2. Extend students’ experimental activities beyond school environment and school hours, especially for overnight or longer time experiments (e.g. photosynthesis, fermentation, rustling processes).3. Integrate with and enrich traditional mobile learning with authentic experiments (i.e. beyond virtual/simulation expts.).4. Promote collaborative learning through real-time sharing of observed data as collected in different places by different students.5. Facilitate STEM education as students can learn and modify the instrument and code small app to control/use the data-logger.Its underlying technology and features are:
- built upon the open-source microcontroller platform called Arduino mega board and a number of sensors
- a new operating system for the mobile logger was specifically developed in which the students can simply press a keypad number to measure
- An Android app called SESlogger (with thousand lines of code in total) was coded for easy use of the system in which it can
1. Provide a user-friendly graphical interface (with corresponding photo of sensor and connection) for students’ easy and remote control of the device.
2. Make use of the GPS function of the smart phone to add geographical information for the place of data collection.
3. Automatically collect data for a long period time with plotting of the corresponding graph.
4. Draw Google maps for a holistic view of data
The invention and design of this mobile logger has rendered (a) a Silver Medal in 46th International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva (Switzerland); (b) a Gold Medal and (c) a Special Inventor Award in the 2017 International Invention Innovation Competition in Canada as held at Toronto. We offer training, student workshops and free loan of the mobile loggers and some related sensors to Hong Kong schools to support their effective learning and teaching of Science, General Studies, Liberal Studies and other STEM subjects.
